Medium term plan-Scène de plage





This half term, year 5 will be learning vocabulary around a beach scene. They will use a well known painting by Degas as the starting point of the topic. They will revise colours and move on to writing a description of the painting and comparing beaches. We will write a poem together as a class, then individual poems will be written. These will then be presented to the class.

Scene de plage

Year 5 started their new topic all about a beach scene. They looked at a number of paintings by French artists depicting beach scenes. They then were introduced to the new vocabulary, which they then practised. They then labelled a beach scene painting by Degas. They learnt the words to a song all about a visit to the beach.

Directions in French

Year 5 learnt some simple directions in French – turning left, right and straight on.they then wrote a few sentences and drew their directions in their books.

Lockdown learning

Year 5 completed their Bon Appetit topic with writing some sentences in the past tense. They then started on their new topic: En route pour ecole, where they sang songs, found out what places are passed on a journey to school. They learnt how to say .there is -Il y a , the alphabet in French and used some time connectives in sentences.

Breakfast

Year 5 practised using Je mange and Je bois and adding what they eat for breakfast. They told their partners what they have and using given sentence structures wrote their own sentences. They translated some sentences and filled in a tick sheet, showing they understand what someone else has for breakfast.

Le petit dejeuner avec les elfes

Year 5 learnt the words to a song Le petit dejeuner. They watched a video of a family ordering food and found out what families in France eat for breakfast. They listened to the Video in both French and English. They then read the video script and used what they had learnt to translate phrases.

Le petit dejeuner

Year 5 learnt all about breakfast in French. They found out that the French do not eat croissants every day, only on weekends. They learnt how to use:Je voudrais – I would like, if they were to order food. They then learnt the names of different items eaten and drunk at breakfast time.

What is in my lunchbox?

Year 5 learnt how to conjugate the verb manger using cards. They also played a memory game with all the foods that could be part of a packed lunch. The next activity was to draw what they would have in their imaginary lunchbox. They took it in turns to ask their partner what was in their lunchbox. They then drew what they heard into the second lunchbox on their sheet.

Bon appetit

Today, year 5 found out about school dinners in France. They learnt that they have an hour for lunch and that the menu is very different to those found in our schools, with mussels and snails being on the menu! They learnt the vocabulary of what they would have for lunch and wrote sentences using Je mange and Je bois.

Je suis le musicien

Year 5 chose an instrument to mime. The class guessed which instrument was being mimed in French, Il joue ….. or Elle joue….. They also asked each other which instruments they played, then they wrote sentences in their books. They then translated a few sentences and answered some questions to test their understanding.
